Background of the Study
Efficient transportation is critical to campus life, and managing shuttle services effectively can greatly enhance the student and staff experience. The University of Agriculture, Makurdi in Makurdi LGA, is exploring the implementation of a campus shuttle tracking system using GPS technology. Traditional methods of shuttle management rely on static schedules and manual tracking, which often result in delays, inefficient route planning, and limited real‑time information. The proposed system leverages GPS tracking to monitor shuttle locations in real time, enabling dynamic scheduling and route optimization. By integrating mobile applications, the system provides users with up‑to‑date information on shuttle arrival times, current locations, and route details (Okafor, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024). This digital solution not only enhances commuter convenience but also improves operational efficiency by enabling the university administration to analyze route performance and adjust services accordingly. Real‑time data collection allows for continuous monitoring and quick response to delays or disruptions, thereby reducing waiting times and improving overall user satisfaction. The system also incorporates features such as push notifications, route maps, and historical data analysis to assist in long‑term planning. However, challenges such as network connectivity, data privacy concerns, and the integration of GPS data with existing university transport systems must be addressed. Pilot studies in similar institutions have demonstrated that GPS‑based shuttle tracking can significantly improve service reliability and commuter satisfaction. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a campus shuttle tracking system at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, providing a framework for improved campus mobility and enhanced transportation management (Chinwe, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
The current shuttle service management at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi relies on traditional scheduling methods that do not provide real‑time updates or route optimization, leading to inefficiencies and commuter dissatisfaction. Students and staff frequently experience delays due to static shuttle schedules and a lack of real‑time tracking, which affects campus mobility and overall service quality. Although a GPS‑based tracking system offers a modern solution by providing live updates and dynamic route adjustments, its implementation is hampered by challenges such as unreliable network connectivity, difficulties in integrating GPS data with legacy systems, and concerns regarding data security and user privacy. In addition, there is resistance from some stakeholders due to unfamiliarity with digital tracking solutions. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of a GPS‑based campus shuttle tracking system by comparing its performance with traditional methods, identifying key technical and operational challenges, and proposing strategies to overcome them. By addressing these issues, the research aims to enhance transportation efficiency, reduce commuter waiting times, and improve the overall campus experience at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi (Adeyemi, 2024).
